What To Do This Week: Get Out!

Never let it be said that Clevelanders would rather work than play. Here are three ideas for getting a jump on TGIF.

1. Tuesday August 14: Fair Time in Lake County. For an event marking its 156th anniversary, the Lake County Fair has no trouble maintaining its identity. “Fairs are about promoting agriculture, first of all, and having educational opportunities for kids,” says spokesman Bob Dawson. “That mission hasn’t changed since 1840.” Livestock apparently plays a key role in forwarding that mission: There’s the daily milking of the dairy herd, the 4-H Club’s annual livestock auction, and more than 170 horses stabled on the Painesville fairgrounds. Of course, there’s lots of other stuff too: truck pulls, live music, plenty of yummy fair food, and today’s 6 p.m. parade among them. Gates open at 8 a.m.; the midway closes at 11 p.m., and the fun continues through Sunday, August 19. General admission is $7, but special weekday promotions help bring down the price.
