Will Mr. Posh Spice be Coming to Cleveland?

As soon as the ink dried on David Beckham’s $250 million deal with the L.A. Galaxy, the English soccer star probably didn’t dream that one of his first matches on American soil would be in Cleveland. But if the Cleveland City Stars (www.clevelandcitystars.com) continue their inaugural year’s undefeated streak, Posh Spice’s hubbie may find himself playing in rock city to start his five-year contract. The Stars – along with 15 other teams from five different leagues – have advanced to the second round of the 94th annual Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. With a 6-0-2 record, they blanked the Kansas City Brass 4-0 in the opening round to set up a showdown in Virginia on Tuesday against the equally loss-free Richmond Kickers. If the Stars win, they’ll make it to Round 3 in a bracket game against Beckham and his fellow Galactics at Cleveland State’s Krenzler Field. Stars coach Martin Rennie doesn’t want to jinx his team’s chances by talking too much about the possible meeting. “We are not looking to anything beyond the next 90 minutes to be played. We are fully aware that the Kickers are the only team standing in our way to a match with the Galaxy,” he says. “But it all means nothing unless we come away with a win next week.” The team’s fan club is planning to charter a bus to root the Stars on in Richmond. Tickets cost $20, and reservations can be made by e-mailing [email protected]. – Cris Glaser
