Mountain Bike Park Open for Biz

Posted By on Mon, Nov 6, 2006 at 12:12 PM

Ray Petro's dream is to make Cleveland the winter wonderland of mountain biking. A few years ago the construction worker created Ray's Indoor Mountain Bike Park, a playground of skinny wooden bridges and bmx-style jumps in a holed-out warehouse off of West Boulevard. Last weekend Ray celebrated his third season opening in style. Some of mountain biking's hottest new talent, as well as the sport's most legendary progenitors, were on hand for the bottle-breaking. They included the Godfather himself, Gary Fisher, who literally invented the sport back in the '70s in California when he put knobby tires on an old beach cruiser and aimed it down a dirt hill, the forefather of free-riding; Hans Rey; and Aaron Chase, one of the sickest tricksters around today. New this year to Ray's is a cross-country course that actually climbs into the rafters of the warehouse, and more sick box jumps, including one that rockets you safely into a cushiony foam pit. So get to Ray's, and remember, Go Big! -- Jared Klaus
