Bob Saget: Rebounding from a history of really, really bad TV
Bob Saget has a crapload of things happening right now. The former Full House star hosts NBC's hit game show 1 vs. 100, he has a rare dramatic turn coming up on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and he comes to town Saturday night for a stand-up show at the Allen Theatre. But we're most excited about his new movie Farce of the Penguins, a feature-length parody of March of the Penguins, which should be in theaters sometime early next year. Saget is putting the finishing touches on the satire, in which he and a bunch of pals (including Christina Applegate, Lewis Black, and Dane Cook) add their voices to snow-covered nature footage. "We wanted to just do the voices on top of the original [March of the Penguins]," says Saget. But the rights cost too much. So Saget sifted through as much cheap stock footage that he could find. And even though Saget refers to Farce as "a stoner penguin movie," he says everybody was professional onset. In fact, there was no hitting the pipe at all. "I wrote the script, and we pretty much stuck to it," he says. "We didn't have time or money to goof around." Farce of the Penguin's greatest coup was scoring Samuel L. Jackson, stepping into the narrator role occupied by Morgan Freeman in March of the Penguins. "Samuel just has this authority about him," says Saget. "Plus, he gets into [onscreen] fights with the penguins." We can't wait for the inevitable "I have had it with these motherfucking penguins on this motherfucking continent!" catch phrase. —Michael Gallucci
