Orlando "El Mediocre" Hernandez

Orlando Hernandez
There's a refreshingly frank and spot-on story about Tribe shortstop Jhonny Peralta inside this morning's sports page. But even more interesting is an accompanying "Chatter" box — I couldn't find it online -- in which PD beat writer Paul Hoynes reports that the Tribe was until recently trying to sign Orlando "El Mediocre" Hernandez -- as a closer. El Duque, as he's also known, instead reupped with the Mets, where he was 11-11 last year. Granted, Hernandez struck out a career-high 164 batters last year, and has a funky delivery that might be tough in one- or two-inning bouts. But the Cuban national is also 39 years old, which is like 44 under the Cuban baseball rules for age disclosure. He should probably closing his career, not Tribe games — Joe P. Tone
