Exploration, Psychadelia & Wicca

Are you adventurous? Scratch that. Are you really adventurous? On a bitter cold weekend in February, in a remote, wooded location, as many as 200 brave souls will gather on a "Vision Quest." A little vague? Picture this: a peyote shaman, a gay male witch, and a bunch of Ph.Ds partying in a cabin in the woods listening to drums and hooking themselves into "mind machines" that pump hallucinations into your brain. Still think you're adventurous? The annual WinterStar Symposium is back. Started in 1984 by local psychedelic explorer Jeff Rosenbaum, the retreat is a melding of the new and old methods of consciousness exploration, psychadelia and wicca, Tim Leary and Aleister Crowley. While it's not a drug-oriented event, don't think you'll be cheated. Rosenbaum promises that his "controlled sensory stimuation device," which sends pulses of light and sound to your brain at special frequencies, will make that hit of acid you took at the Skynyrd concert in '76 seem like aspirin. "The experience is as if somebody created an animated film just for you," he says. "Usually people are disappointed when they take acid because they don't get animations in their heads." The event takes place February 8-11 at Atwood Lake Resort in Delroy, (about a half-hour southeast of Canton). And have a nice trip. . . -- Jared Klaus
