New Nine Inch Nails Today

Read a full review of the new Nine Inch Nails album, Year Zero, in an upcoming edition of Scene. But since the disc drops today, and since we live in an an age of increasingly half-assed -- nay, quarter-assed -- albums, and since NIN mastermind Trent Reznor is a former Clevelander, and since he's one of the few guys who consistently serves up quality products that deserve your hard-earned entertainment dollars, you're probably wondering if you should just run right out and buy it. We've been listening to the album for a couple weeks, and the answer is yes. The disc sounds like a hybrid of 2004's poppier With Teeth and 1999's epic, sorely underrated The Fragile. Initially, the potential singles don't sound as solid as the standout cuts from With Teeth, but they grow on you. And the instrumental programming plays like a harsher take on The Fragile, filtered through an Atari 2600. The disc flows, and it rocks. Don't do the iTunes thing: The packaging is cool and eerie -- the rear photo looks like it was taken in the Flats after a nuclear attack. And it ties in with a bigger multimedia campaign; call 866-445-6580 for a taste. -- D.X. Ferris
