A gay response to death of Jerry Falwell, translated

Posted By on Wed, May 16, 2007 at 2:24 PM

Matt Foreman, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, issued this statement yesterday in response to the death of the Reverend Jerry Falwell. For your convenience, we’ve added footnotes to translate his message: "The death of a family member or friend is always a sad occasion (1) and we express our condolences (2) to all those who were close (3) to the Rev. Jerry Falwell. Unfortunately, we will always remember him as a founder and leader of America’s anti-gay industry (4), someone who exacerbated the nation’s appalling response (5) to the onslaught of the AIDS epidemic, someone who demonized and vilified us for political gain and someone who used religion to divide rather than unite our nation." 1). Yippee! Who needs another mimosa? 2). Something really mean is coming in the next sentence. 3). President Bush, some nut-jobs in Cincinnati, Satan, and probably the Green River Killer. 4). No, I’m not talking about the guys who make plaid shirts. 5). Who got the wrath of God this time, bitch? -- Jared Klaus
