Mikey G's Weekend Entertainment Picks

Posted By on Fri, Jun 8, 2007 at 3:15 PM

This weekend’s top arts and entertainment picks around town, from the guy who’s paid to pick them: Friday: Not much happens in Syndromes and a Century, the latest movie by Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Ostensibly the story of the filmmaker’s doctor parents, the work -- an often disjointed connection of long scenes and tranquil images -- unspools as an abstract rumination on love and memories. This quiet, dreamlike film isn’t about the story -- indeed, there’s no conflict, resolution, or even plot. Rather, it’s centered on the beautifully rendered and fragmented recollections of a moviemaker working at the top of his game. It screens at the Cinematheque. Saturday: Fountains of Wayne cut to the chase on their fourth album. After 10 years of songs about planes, trains and automobiles, they simply call their new CD Traffic and Weather. One cut even takes place in a DMV. Traffic and Weather pretty much sticks to the power-pop formula they perfected on 2003’s breakthrough, Welcome Interstate Managers. There’s no “Stacy’s Mom” here to lure the unconverted, but there are plenty of casual hooks that’ll have Fountain of Wayne fans nodding with delight. They play House of Blues. Sunday: Sure, Thursday night’s loss was crushing. But it’s only the first game. You can cheer on the team in Game Two at the Q’s Cavaliers 3D HD Experience. The game not only will be beamed on a ginormous screen, it’s being billed as the “first-ever live game of the finals in 3D HD.” Hopefully, all this fancy technology will improve LeBron’s performance. Tip-off is at 9 p.m., but doors open at 7:30 for the watch party. --Michael Gallucci
