Scene Again Named Ohio's Best Non-Daily

Posted By on Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 6:40 PM

Scene writers, the best journalists in Ohio? We’re as surprised as you are, but apparently the judges at the Press Club of Cleveland’s Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards seem to think so. Our little rag left the Press Club’s award ceremony last Friday with enough wooden plaques to cover the walls of approximately 3 ½ of our shitty apartments. Scene was named the best non-daily in Ohio for the third year running. (It might be longer than that, but we lost the plaques.) All told, the paper took home 23 awards, including 10 first place finishes. Action Rock Photographer Walter Novak took home six awards, including a sweep of the entire studio photography category. And alleged editor Pete Kotz was named the best columnist in Ohio. Kotz said he was overjoyed with the award, yet mildy disappointed that the trophy didn’t come in cup form (it’s not easy drinking Pabst from a wooden cut-out of the Buckeye State). Scene also loaded up on the hardware. Rebecca Meiser took home the award for best investigative story with “Hush," an expose on the sex scandal at Notre Dame College. Denise Grollmus took first place in the arts & entertainment category for “The Great Pretenders," which brought to light how knock-off soul bands are defrauding the original artists. The lovely Lisa Rab brought home the silver medal in the politics and government category for “The Sweetest Deal," an in-depth look at the one of the shadiest transactions in Cleveland history: the sale of the IX Center. And the list goes on. No, really: 1st Place, Illustration: Meredith Pangrace for “Monsters of Misery Court” 2nd Place, Cover Design: Meredith Pangrace for “Love & Hate” 1st Place, Local Community Coverage: Jared Klaus for “Boyz in the Hood” 1st Place, Personality Profile: Jared Klaus for “Cheating Death” Honorable Mention, Personality Profile: Lisa Rab for “Fall of the Fourth Reich” 2nd Place, Investigative Story: Lisa Rab for “Screams in the Dark” 2nd Place, Headline Writing: Erich Burnett for “Tortilla Flat” 1st Place, Arts Criticism: Christine Howey for “What Women Want” Honorable Mention, Best Critic in Ohio: Christine Howey 1st Place, Business Column: Pete Kotz for “Be Afraid” 1st Place, Lifestyle Column: Pete Kotz for “Spam for Nigeria” Honorable Mention, Sports Column: Pete Kotz for “Call the Ringmaster” As they says in France, Booyyaahhhh! -- Jared Klaus
