Mikey G's Entertainment Picks of the Week

Posted By on Mon, Jul 23, 2007 at 1:10 PM

This week’s top arts and entertainment picks around town, from the guy who’s paid to pick them: Monday: Of all the groups that came out of the great new-wave revival of 2002, Interpol remains the one most dedicated to preserving the Spirit of ’81. On their latest album, Our Love to Admire, the NYC band plays danceable gloom-pop – just like their idols Joy Division used to play. It’s a solid facsimile for modern audiences. They’re at House of Blues tonight. Tuesday: The Great Lakes Brewing Company celebrates Christmas in July by tapping several kegs of its popular Christmas Ale. A decorated tree, strings of lights, and other seasonal ornaments welcome visitors to the party, which includes hors d’oeuvres, sugar cookies, and a raffle to win mugs and T-shirts. But the pint-size glasses of ale will undoubtedly hog most of the attention. Wednesday: We’re surprised as anyone that alt-country group the Old 97’s are still around. Leader Rhett Miller has been busy with his solo career lately, and the Dallas band’s last two albums were live and greatest-hits set. They’re on the road -- presumably reminding fans that they are indeed still a band. They stop at the Beachland. Thursday: In the past year, comedian Steve Byrne snagged the TBS/MySpace Stand-Up or Sit Down Comedy Competition title, starred in NBC’s reality show The Real Wedding Crashers, and still found time to work on his stand-up act. He’s at the Improv (2000 Sycamore Street in the Flats) through Sunday. Friday: The Early Show broadcasts live at the Rock Hall from 7 to 9 a.m. Rock Hall inductee and all-around superwoman Patti Smith will perform live. Jackass celebrity chef Bobby Flay will also be there. The CBS morning program will set up a stage in front of the Rock Hall, so get there early to ensure your TV close-up. --Michael Gallucci
