Cleveland Foodies Unite: Local chefs cook it up for a cause

Posted By on Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 11:40 AM

The patch of Tremont surrounding Lucky’s Café will take on a street-fair vibe this Sunday, July 29, complete with live music, a children’s art show, and gourmet grub, as chef-owner Heather Haviland and 14 of her closest colleagues – including chefs Matt Harlan (Lolita), Rocco Whalen (Fahrenheit), Karen Small (Flying Fig), Doug Katz (Fire), and Pam Waterman (Duet Fine Catered and Prepared Foods) – come together to eat, drink, and raise money for two-year-old Amelia Wong. Amelia, daughter of Lockkeepers’ executive chef Ky Wai Wong, has been diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, a degenerative disease that affects the muscles that control walking, breathing, and swallowing. (One of a set of triplets, she is fortunately the only one affected by the illness.) Proceeds from the event, “A Fun Day for Amelia,” will go help the Wong family with medical expenses and benefit the Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy organization. (The same group of chefs hosted a seven-course dinner in June to benefit the Wongs and FSMA; that event raised more than $12,000.) A $35 ticket buys you access to the music, art show, and fabulous hors d’oeuvres, along with beer, wine, a silent auction, and plenty of good karma. And don’t hesitate to make it a family outing: the event is free for kids under 18, and a series of children’s games will keep the small fry happy. Purchase tickets at Lucky’s Café, 777 Starkweather Avenue, in Tremont, or by calling 330-777-0245. --- Elaine T. Cicora
