Rat Reprieve: Larry Jones Skates on his Corruption Sentencing Again

Posted By on Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 5:20 PM

When last left Larry Jones, he was on the brink of trading in his street clothes for a bright orange jumpsuit courtesy of the federal government [“The Devil in Mr. Jones,” July 25]. Jones was originally scheduled in July for bank fraud and money laundering after pleading guilty to the charges around a year ago. His date with destiny, however, has been pushed back once again, this time to November. Seems the government isn’t done with using his “cooperation” to bring down people tied into the construction of Lorain County’s justice center. Jones is also facing state charges for allegedly taking and giving bribes for county contracts when his buddy, former county commissioner Michael Ross, was in office. Jones was once the head of his own multi-million dollar computer company in Elyria that was stacking up lucrative government contracts. But like a drowning man who keeps grabbing other people to keep afloat, Jones’ been staying out of the slammer by helping with the government’s probe into Lorain County corruption. Now caught up in the mess is Warren Finkel, an 86-year-old architect who looks more like Mr. Rogers than Tony Soprano. Prosecutors allege Finkel was brokering bribes through Jones and Ross while serving as a consultant for the Collins Gordon Bostwick Architects. At this rate, Jones might be Finkel’s age by the time he gets sentenced. – T.K. Kim
