Aly & AJ play the PD Pavilion Wednesday.
This week’s top arts and entertainment picks around town, from the guy who’s paid to pick them: Monday: Local artist Alane Potokar Sandoval piles on the abstract shapes, colors, and skewed perspectives in Drawings & Paintings, now on view at the Beck Center. The exhibit features a dozen recent works by the Kent State University grad. Best of all, Sandoval will be alternating new pieces throughout the run. So there’s a good chance that this week’s display won’t look anything at all like next week’s. Tuesday: After months of delay, Talib Kweli’s new CD, Eardrum, finally hit the streets last week. Kweli piles on the old-school beats and plenty of socially conscious hip-hop. But he also leaves plenty of room for cool cameos (Kanye and Norah Jones, among them) and some tough rhymes. He brings the noise to House of Blues. Wednesday: Off all the teenpop phenoms that have rolled off the Disney assembly line over the past couple years, Aly & AJ are by far our favorite. The cutie sisters’ new album, Insomniac, is a surprisingly likable slice of corporate pop. Check them out at the Plain Dealer Pavilion. Thursday: Even though the Bangles recorded a new album in 2003, most of their old fans didn’t hear it. Thankfully, their current tour focuses on all their ‘80s hits: “Manic Monday,” “Walk Like an Egyptian,” “Eternal Flame,” etc. Hear ‘em at House of Blues. Friday: Cleveland Museum of Art screens Tim Burton’s 1990 fantasy Edward Scissorhands tonight. The film’s cinematographer, Stefan Czapasky (who was born in Cleveland), will be on hand to answer your questions about how dreamy Johnny Depp is. -- Michael Gallucci
