KRS-One At Rock Hall Tonight

Posted By on Mon, Sep 24, 2007 at 12:15 PM

Hip-hop godfather KRS-ONE will speak at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum (1 Key Plaza, Downtown) Monday, September 24, at 7 p.m. Admission is free with a reservation; contact or call 216-515-8426. KRS-ONE stands for Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone. After introducing the tough street motif to hip-hop, KRS reinvented himself as a teacher, filling his rhymes with provocative commentary about politics and hip-hop itself. In 1987's "I'm Still #1," he rapped, "Rap is art / And no one's from the old school / 'Cuz rap on the whole / Isn't even 20 years old." Well, that was 20 years ago, so it's time to start asking some questions, and the Rock Hall is the perfect place to do it. Granted, he's been known to go off the rails a little bit. So the talk will either be a brilliantly incisive commentary on hip-hop culture and its history -- or a long diatribe about how Shakespeare caused 9/11. Don't get us wrong, though: Taken with a grain of salt, they're both great listening. Where else are you going to get a better does of what he calls "edutainment" on a Monday night? -- D.X. Ferris
