Reader: A Rip-Off Courtesy of the North Royalton School Board

Posted By on Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 2:44 PM

Dear North Royalton Citizen and Taxpayer: It is my understanding that the two departing school board members, Cathy Bican and Barb Soggs, have quietly chosen to attend the November OSBA Capital Conference in Columbus. This conference is a great help to new board members, informing them of procedures and protocols necessary for a new board member. Yet the two newly elected board members, Leonard Reinhard and Anne Reinkober, have not been invited to attend. This school board has chosen instead to allow the two departing board members to abuse taxpayer’s money. This conference -- or in the case of the departing board members, a mini vacation -- is complete with vendor parties, cocktail parties, dinner at a four star restaurant, all their other meals, and accommodations in one of Columbus’s best hotels. Sounds like a great vacation that everyone of us would like to take. With my previous experience on the school board, and having been an attendee of this conference, I find it disturbing that Cathy Bican and Barb Soggs see fit to repeat this wrong, and steal this valuable educational opportunity from the new board members. When my four year term came to a close, I was criticized by fellow board members in the local news rag (Sun News) for choosing to give up my seat at this conference to allow newly elected member Barbara Zindroski to attend. The remaining four board members would not approve Barbara to attend the conference, so she chose instead to attend at her own expense, staying with her daughter who was attending OSU at that time. The four remaining board members -- Cathy Bican, Heidi Dolezal, Barbara Soggs and Cheryl Tuttle -- then voted to have the school district fund their little mini vacation on the taxpayer’s expense. My concern is still the waste of taxpayer money. Their attendance at this conference has no positive contribution to this school district. It is in fact an abuse of their position and a waste our tax dollars. It is truly a shame that all four of these women act as though this is their school district and not the kids. I guess we should be grateful that after January 1st, the departing members can no longer abuse their duties and cheat the tax payers of true representation. Bob Grace Former North Royalton School Board Member
