Close Encounters screens Sunday at Now That's Class. Which is a bar. Which means it has beer. See where we're going with this?
A random but reliable sample of the weekend's entertainment options, cooked up weekly by C-Notes ... Friday: Thrash quartet Know Think drops in to the Davenport (6287 Pearl Road, Parma Heights) for a 9 p.m. show with opening act Antilles. The New Jersey foursome are peddling a new EP, Clean Closet, and have sandwiched the Northeast Ohio show in between gigs in Ann Arbor, Chicago, and Detroit. Saturday: Starting at 3 p.m., help celebrate another of Scott Anderson’s thirtysomething birthdays as he hosts the sixth annual Chili Cook-Off at his club, Closing Room (13813 Lorain Avenue; 216-688-1670). And for $2 a bowl, you can cast your vote on the chili chef who’ll take home the $150 first-place prize. Sunday: Now That’s Class doubles as a moviehouse at 9 p.m. for a triple play of space-alien flicks. The club will screen Communion about a dude who claims to have spiritual connections to other worlds. It’s followed by Fire in the Sky, which is based on a true story of a reported 1975 alien abduction in Arizona. Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind caps off the bill with a spookfest about Richard Dreyfuss is haunted by UFOs in the wilderness. -- Cris Glaser
