Akron Farmers' Market, Winter-Style, This Saturday

Posted By on Fri, Jan 18, 2008 at 12:29 PM

The strawberries are long gone, the tomatoes are but a sweet memory, and those beets you put out in November are starting to look a little scary. Yeah, it’s tough to be an Ohio “loca-vore” in winter, but here’s an idea for replenishing the pantry – or at least having a little fun. Check out the Akron Farmers’ Market this Saturday, January 19, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Lock 3 Park No, the farmers aren’t standing out in the middle of a field ... The market is actually set up inside the former O’Neil’s department store’s cozy basement. (However, those hearty enough to brave the elements are welcome to bring their ice skates and hit the outdoor rink.) Among the foods and wares, find herbs, jams, jellies, apples, honey, breads, chocolates, pastries, wines, and cheeses. Also available for purchase from noon to 3 p.m. will be Akron’s famous Blue Santa. And here’s a tidbit: Santa’s co-creator, Akronite Mike Cohill, is the brother of Crooked River Herb Farm proprietor and staunch farmer’s market advocate, Kathleen Varga. These earthy types think alike. --- Elaine T. Cicora
