Against Cleveland State, One Diebler Brother is Just Like the Other

Posted By on Mon, Jan 21, 2008 at 3:41 PM

During surging Cleveland State’s 69-63 thump-down of Valparaiso on Saturday, fans at the Wolstein Center, suddenly feeling cocky, let the smack-eth fly against Valpo guard Jake Diebler. The former Upper Sandusky high school star responded by clanking shot after shot, giving his Valpo teammates a night to forget. The Viking student section chanted “Diebler sucks” every time he touched the ball. It was a non-stop hate down for a guy who left Ohio to attend a private Lutheran university in Indiana. ... Diebler, wearing a Rip Hamilton-inspired face mask, kept his composure and ignored most of taunts. But one seemed to get his attention. A large man sporting a walrus mustache sat at the southeast end of the stadium with a plastic mega-phone in his hands. Each time Diebler missed a shot, the fan bellowed out, “You shoot like your brother.” Of course, the fan was referring to Diebler’s younger sibling and high-school legend, Jon Diebler, now at Ohio State. Jon, who averaged 41 points a game his senior year at Upper Sandusky, had a similarly frustrating night recently against Tennessee. In the last 13 seconds of the game, he clanked two 3-pointers that would have pulled the Buckeyes even. So with every bellow, the fan reminded Jake Diebler just how he and his family sucked. His taunts had the press box laughing and, at times, cringing. But apparently they worked. Diebler finished the night 1-for-9 from the field. -- Bradley Campbell
