Restaurant of the Weekend: A Winking Lizard Near You

Posted By on Thu, Jan 31, 2008 at 7:01 AM

The majority of Americans who watch the Super Bowl this Sunday will do so in their family rooms, while noshing on store-bought pizza and wings. According to industry sources, in fact, February 3 will be the biggest day of the year for pizza chains. Domino’s estimates it will deliver more than 1.2 million pies that day, while industry leader Pizza Hut expects 2.5 million calls. ... On the other hand, only one in 20 of us will head to a bar or tavern to watch the big game. As a result, many smaller eateries will take the day off, including the Rusty Bucket Corner Tavern in Solon, where staffers will attend their annual after-holiday party instead. Still, for those of you without family rooms, tellies, or friends, most of our homegrown Winking Lizard Taverns will offer safe harbor, with gift giveaways, cheap beer, and 50-inch plasma TVs. Managers at the Gateway District Lizard (811 Huron Road; 216-589-0313) don’t expect too much excitement on Sunday – which actually might be just right for the most serious viewers. But staffers do recommend the Lakewood location (14018 Detroit Ave., 216-226-6693), as well as the spiffy new digs in Bedford Heights (25380 Miles Rd., 216-831-3488) as prime viewing destinations. Click here for menus and a full list of locations. And once you pick your spot, grab one of those 32-ounce Miller Lights ($4), a couple dozen of the tavern’s award-winning wings, and enjoy the show. -- Elaine T.
