All the Cleveland State Vikings need is a little Iranian pick-me up ...

Cleveland State Basketball: Thanks for finally coming through. After five losses in a row, all but crushing this city’s hope for a winner, you finally nabbed a win on Saturday, against Detroit Mercy, which is believed to be a team of retired auto workers. But please do not stop there. The city needs a winner. The Viking pep band needs fighters for its fight song. The boosters – you know, those two weird middle-aged guys who slipped envelopes full of coupons for free oil changes in your gym bag after you beat Valpo -- need a team that can overcome history. And this newspaper needs a couple more wins to make that story we did last week about how you were finally coming around seem less, well, retarded. ... So keep it up. Schedule some games with some middle-school girls teams, if that’s what it takes to get your confidence back. Win out. Get back on the front page of the sports section. Nab a top three finish in the Horizon League. Run the table and at the league tourney and get an automatic bid to the dance. Not feeling it? We didn’t think so. Our powers of motivation have never been much, unless we were trying to motivate ourselves watch one more episode of Charmed before bed, in which case we’re amazing. But if you need some more inspiration, beyond John Wooden maxims or LeBron James biographies, look toward to the east, across the great Atlantic, toward the mystic land of Persia and a young Iranian girl named Marjane. She lived through bombing raids, police interrogations, and life without Pabst tallboys. But she clawed back to succeed in life. She persevered against all odds. And you can learn from her life. Lucky for us all, Marjane's story was made into a movie. It’s called Persepolis and it's playing at Cedar Lee, that theatre where all the English majors you try to sleep with see their movies. The movie is basically Hoosiers, only it’s animated, and there's no Gene Hackman. But it will help you see the primal fight inherent in all humans. For the Cliff’s Notes version – and we know how athletes love Cliff and his notes – we present to you the above montage from the film, which blends the best of Rocky, leg waxing, and jazzercise. It has nothing to do with basketball, but everything to do with life. And since basketball is life, and the rest is just details, watching it will help your game. And that will help us all. – Bradley Campbell
