American Idol viewing parties take over Union Station bar

Posted By on Thu, Feb 28, 2008 at 9:40 AM

Why wish a fiery death on Simon Cowell from on the couch at home when you can join the cheering section at Union Station’s free American Idol Viewing Party? Every time the Fox talent show is on, the gay-friendly club, just over the bridge from downtown, broadcasts it on its widescreen TV. .... As far as loyal Paul Camp and Kelly Ignacio can tell, the seventh season of the reality-TV juggernaut is boiling down to a battle of the Davids vs. Amanda. Among the 20 pop-tart wannabes left in the competition, 17-year-old David Archuleta of Utah and 24-year-old David Hernandez of Arizona have Camp in their corner. “The 17-year-old has a voice to remember. A tear in my eye and a chill down my spine,” he says. “And Hernandez’ performances have been amazing. It looks like there’s a difference between someone singing their best and a natural vocalist.” While the 10 male contestants tried to impress Simon, Paula, and Randy during Tuesday night’s show and the 10 girls went last night, tonight is the results’ show. Ignacio is putting 23-year-old Amanda Overmyer of Indiana on the short list of competitors, who’ll make it to the Top-12 in a couple weeks. “She’s got the whole package: that Janis Joplin voice with that awesome-cool hair,” she says. “She looks and sounds like the offspring of a Harley-biker chick and Bob Seger.” Find out for yourself whenever the show airs, at 2814 Detroit Avenue, or call 216-357-2997 for details. -- Cris Glaser
