Alternative Press' 100 Bands list includes Cleveland's Bears and Salt of the Wound

Alternative Press, the Cleveland-based music mag, shows admirably little local bias, aside from hiring a couple local hacks to write now and then, present company included. But three homegrown acts get the spotlight in the April issue, which includes its annual industry tip sheet, the 100 Bands You Need to Know list. ... AP is arguably the country’s number-one, three, four, or two music magazine, depending whether you judge by circulation (#4) or how well the publication actually roots out breaking bands (#1) that go on to appear on the cover of Blender, Rolling Stone, and Spin once they start making weak records. In the new issue, Cleveland’s delicate pop band Bears get a nod as a Band You Need to Know. The mag’s scattershot metal/hardcore review section hits two recent local releases: Carnal Repercussions from the brutal lads of Salt the Wound, who recently signed to L.A.’s respectable Rotten Records. And the mag totally breaks character by giving props to Forever in Leather, a retro-thrashterpiece by Destructor, who have been around since AP’s senior staffers would have laughed heartily at the notion of covering the band. We guess years of covering acts like Disturbed and Panic at the Disco can really make you appreciate some fist-pumpin’ speed metal. – D.X. Ferris
