Restaurant of the Weekend: Light Bistro

Posted By on Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 10:45 AM

Light chef Matt Mathlage will serve up a special anniversary menu this weekend.
We don’t need an excuse to recommend dining at Light Bistro, that intimate little boîte in Ohio City, where chef and co-owner Matt Mathlage offers playful takes on progressive American cuisine. But how’s this for an incentive? This weekend, March 6 through 8, marks the restaurant’s one-year anniversary, and to celebrate, Mathlage has cooked up a seven-course “best of” dinner, highlighting his favorite dishes from the past annum. ... An amuse bouche of ephemeral eggplant flan begins the time-tested lineup, followed by spring garlic soup with puffed rice and EVOO, butternut squash ravioli with cinnamon Béchamel and heirloom apples, seared sea scallops with butternut squash risotto, and – our personal fave – succulent pork belly, on a golden bed of pineapple “carpaccio” and chipotle-inflected couscous. Then it’s on to Ohio lamb, with swiss chard, a sweet pepper gastrique, and candied banana peppers, before wrapping up with sweet-potato and pecan pie, with ginger-candied bacon ice cream. Plus, the magnanimous Mathlage admits he found it so hard to narrow down the menu to a “mere” seven courses, “I’m gonna have to throw in a few surprises!” Cost for the dinner is $75 per person. Mathlage and his business partner, Eric Dietrich, will also be using this weekend to preview Light’s upcoming bar menu, featuring such savory noshes as lamb burgers, pork-belly finger sandwiches, ham and cheddar croquettes, and flatiron Thai salad. Each will be available for $5, at the bar only. And finally, two of Light’s new house-infused vodkas will debut this weekend. Both the ginger and the green-tea versions will be featured in $5 cocktails, including the ginger-pear mule and the green-tea martini. Of course, items from Mathlage’s regular a la cart menu will be available, too. Light Bistro is at 2801 Bridge Ave. Make reservations at Open Table, or call the bistro at 216-771-7130.
