Yes! The Indians' Free Money Night is back!

Posted By on Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 2:37 PM

If you missed the best promotional event of the Indians season last year, don’t worry. It’s back. No, it wasn’t Dollar Dog night. Don’t get us wrong: We love hot dogs – all encased meats, really -- but honestly, 50,000 hot dogs? That’s just disgusting. It also wasn’t “camo hat night,” although who doesn’t love a camouflage baseball hat? And no, it wasn’t Hurl Vaguely Offensive Insults and the Occasional Socket Wrench at Manny Ramirez Night. Turns out that wasn’t a sanctioned event. Whoops! ... No, it wasn’t any of those things. It was Free Money Night. And it’s coming back for 2008, on June 28, against the Cincinatti Reds. (Thanks to the Home Run Derby blog for breaking this fantastic news.) Here’s how it works: If you are one of the first 32,849 fans to walk into the stadium, you’ll receive an envelope with free money in it. According to Home Run Derby: “32,700 envelopes of that Free Money is $33,100 of ‘Progressive Field Fun Money’ in $1 or $5 increments,” basically gift certificates. Which isn’t a bad thing considering I spend more on processed meats and booze at a game than I do on the ticket. That leaves $16,900 in cold hard cash up for grabs, including one $10,000 grand-prize. Woohoo! Give the Tribe brass credit: they know their fanbase well enough to realize this will be a huge hit. Combine the lottery with hot dogs, beer, and cash, and you’ll bring in the fans every time. So bring your lucky rabbit’s foot, or your lucky envelope opener, or your sign that reads, “$50,000 would be better spent on CC than me,” and get in the free-money spirit. – Vince Grzegorek
