West Park Station feels bad for making you fat, starts contest to make you less fat

So your ripped six-pack has turned into a bloated keg over the winter. And West Park Station nightspot is feeling a tad guilty about it. That’s why the club is helping to recruit patrons who’ve put on a few pounds over the holidays to compete in the West Park Six-Pack Challenge. Think Celebrity Fit Club meets Cheers. Here’s how it goes down: ... For a $200 entry fee, each contestant will have their digital pics taken at an initial weigh-in at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at St. Mel’s Catholic Church, 14440 Triskett Road. (Hey, you gotta have God on your side for this one.) Then, contenders will meet at the church for twice-a-week “boot camps,” at which trainers from Fitness Edge gym will give nutrition and exercise tips to lose the beer belly. Contestants also compete in weekly weight-loss challenges, in which they can win gift certificates for gas and movie tickets. The deal includes weekly support calls and e-mails from the trainers, a nutrition-and-exercise guidebook, and a 10-percent discount on any entree off West Park’s menu. After 10 weeks, competitors will meet at the church on June 30 for a final weigh-in. The contestant who’s lost the highest percentage of body weight will score $1,000 in cash and a vacation for two for four days in Cancun. Even if you don’t win, you can celebrate your new body at a happy-hour blowout on July 12 at the bar. West Park regular Dan Dicenzo – a 5-foot-9, 235-pound, thirtysomething bean-counter from Avon Lake -- admits he can stand to lose a few (dozen) pounds. “The older you get, the easier it is to say, ‘Does it really matter anymore?’” he says. “But when you look at the young’uns sitting next to you at the bar, you tell yourself, ‘Yeah, I can look like that again.’” -- Cris Glaser
