Krazy days coming to Cheddar’s Cafe

Look for Cheddar’s Café (5800 Detroit Ave., 216-631-7555) to morph into Krazy Mac’s at the end of April. This marks the restaurant’s third name change since owner Ron Heinbaugh took over in 2005. Just call it a concept-in-progress. ... After all, when Heinbaugh originally opened on Detroit Avenue, it was with a new version of the old favorite, Snicker’s Tavern, which he had operated at the end of West 76th St. since 2000. (That space has recently become Reddstone.) In February 2007, he got the bright idea to try out a mac & cheese menu in the next-door space. Not surprisingly – hey, there are reasons why Clevelanders are among the nation’s plumpest – the carbo-fest was an immediate success. And realizing he had a winner on his hands, Heinbaugh combined both restaurants under one name: Cheddar’s Café. Now he’s tinkering with the concept again, focusing ever more closely on the mac & cheese – which he says makes up almost 80 percent of his sales – while slowly dropping some of the older, Snicker’s-style entrees from the lineup. Heinbaugh also says he discovered a Texas restaurant chain that bills itself as Cheddar’s Casual Café. “To avoid any legal complications, it seemed wise to change the name.” Viola: Krazy Mac’s, the name that takes effect on April 30. Along with the moniker massage, Heinbaugh is also hoping to emphasize a more family-friendly vibe, complete with a kids’ menu and moderate prices. (Most of the ample pasta bowls, including our fave, the rich and gooey Buffalo Mac, check in at $9 to $13.) He’s also expanding, with a second location coming to Elyria (202 Broad Street), featuring a 50-seat dining room and a menu of more than 20 types of his signature mac & cheese. Heinbaugh expects the Elyria spot to open in July, serving lunch and dinner, daily. For a taste of the full mac attack, click here. --- Elaine T.
