Baskin-Robbins, resigned to being bootleg alternative to Ben & Jerry’s, holds 31-cent Scoop Night

Baskin-Robbins was your grandfather’s ice cream shop back when he crapped his pants because he was too young, rather than too old, to know better. Kids would bike to the nearest scoop shop, Ted Williams baseball card stuck in their spokes, for one of B-R’s 31 taste-of-the-era flavors, like bubble gum, sasparilla, bark, and gin n’ tonic. Alas, the glory days are over for Baskin-Robbins, which now plays third fiddle to Ben & Jerry’s and Haagen-Dazs. But all they want is for you to remember that they still exist. ... That seems to be the message behind their 31-cent Scoop Night on Wednesday, 24 hours after Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day. Like the Ben & Jerry’s promo, this one helps out a charity. Also similarly, you don’t care. But we’ll tell you anyway: your quarter, nickel, and penny will go to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, you double-chinned Mother Theresa, you. You can get your heavily discounted scoops from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, and unlike those cheapskates over at Ben & Jerry’s, all local Baskin-Robbinses (Baskin-Robbinsi?) are participating. Since we’re determined to corner the local promotional ice cream giveaway news beat, we’ve once again provided a map of the nearby locations. Just click here. -- Gus Garcia-Roberts
