Going to tomorrow night’s Stone Temple Pilots reunion show at the State Theatre? Writer Matt Wardlaw caught the band’s performance at Columbus’ Rock the Range fest on Saturday. Here’s what you can expect. This past weekend’s second-annual Rock on the Range festival in Columbus served as a primer for the reunited Stone Temple Pilots’ show at the State Theatre tomorrow night. Within the slightly less intimate confines of Columbus Crew Stadium, STP kicked off their reunion tour with the mellow “Big Empty.” Ever the chameleon, frontman Scott Weiland – sporting a suit – then kicked up the energy with “Wicked Garden.” The problem-attracting singer was recently booted from Velvet Revolver for his erratic behavior, and Saturday’s performance wasn’t without its share of it. His between-songs banter was brief and often cryptic, often offering little more than a softly spoken title. The show was less about the talk and more about the rock. And that’s a good thing ... Guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist brother Robert DeLeo, and drummer Eric Kretz were right on as STP’s backbone. The group was accompanied by an impressive light show and images from its music videos, which set a particularly cool vibe during “Interstate Love Song.” Weiland noted that the band would be mixing up the set list every night of the tour. This kick-off concert included rarities like “Lounge Fly,” “Coma,” and “All in the Suit That You Wear.” Die-hard fans appreciated these songs, but more casual festivalgoers bolted for the exits. The main set wrapped with “Sex Type Thing” and “Trippin’ on a Hole in a Paper Heart,” before the band returned for an encore that included the megaphone-assisted “Dead and Bloated.” Rock on the Range also included sets by the reactivated Filter, Black Tide, Alter Bridge, Sevendust, 3 Doors Down, and Kid Rock. –Matt Wardlaw
