Last Night in Cleveland: Filter

“This one is for the mosh pit that has yet to arrive,” taunted Filter frontman Richard Patrick from House of Blues stage’s last night. It arrived early in the long-awaited homecoming show by the Bay Village native. A little encouragement was all it took. And from the opening chords of Short Bus favorite “Dose,” the Cleveland crowd got their “dose” of moshing and crowd surfing for the week. A concert-opening/lung-cleaning exercise of “Welcome to the Fold” was all that Patrick needed to jump into the 90-minute set, which was unfortunately plagued by sound problems most of the night. Patrick performed two of the strongest tracks from Filter’s new politically charged CD, Anthems of the Damned: the single “Soldiers of Misfortune” and the raging “The Take.” The set mostly featured a cross-section of Filter’s back catalog -- including a surprisingly whopping seven songs from 1999’s Title of Record, one of the band's best albums ... The set also made room for a couple of unexpected moments, like soundtrack rarity and fan favorite “Jurassitol.” Patrick recruited a new lineup for the tour: guitarist Mitchell Marlow, bass player (and Akron native) John Spiker, and drummer Mika Fineo -- all of whom play well with Patrick. It was a tight performance, one that Patrick suggested was long overdue. He thanked the Cleveland crowd for giving “this little kid from Bay Village the welcome home that he always wanted” and also gave a nod to his parents, who were in the audience. The band’s biggest hit,” Take a Picture,” closed the show. At last week’s Rock the Range festival in Columbus, Patrick referred to the ballad as “our summer song.” It’s one of Filter’s few mellow and feel-good songs and a perfect set-ender. Patrick summed it all up: “Rock and roll will never die, as long as Cleveland, Ohio, is on the fucking map.” Hey man, nice shot! --Matt Wardlaw
