Money Where Your Mouth Is: Smiley Baldazar at the Winchester

Posted By on Thu, May 29, 2008 at 2:57 PM

Every so often, C-Notes passes the mic to a band and lets them explain why your life will be better if you go see 'em, even if gas is, like, 37 bucks a gallon. This week: Smiley Baldazar. Why? Because they're really funny. And they jam like hell, but not in a hippie way, which would suck. Also, if you like them, or just really like free stuff, the first two readers to e-mail us their name get a copy of their new CD free; we'll mail it to you, or you can pick it up at Scene's offices. Technically, that should mean you can skip the band's CD release party at the Winchester this weekend, but you shouldn't. Read on for their pitch, and the show details. -- D.X. Ferris Band: Smiley Baldazar Web: MySpace.com/SmileyBaldazar Hometown: Lakewood, OH Sounds like: “Depends on the song and/or the mood and/or the venue. We could be like Primus or Zappa or Radiohead or Syd Barrett or Outkast or like King Crimson or even Wilco, The Dead, whatever. We just write stuff and jam out hoping to help people forget about their bullshit for a while.” Recommend for fans of: "Original homegrown goodies that help ease the pain caused by the inefficient bureaucracy that makes up everyday life." Fun fact: “Glass is actually a liquid, not a solid like most people believe. If you let a piece of glass sit for like 1,000 years, it will eventually 'pour' into a 'puddle.'" Playing Where/When: Saturday, May 31st at Shawn of the Dead's favorite hangout, The Winchester in Lakewood, 12112 Madison Ave., 216-226-5681, www.thewinchester.net. Why you need to see them: “Pretty much bragging rights. If you come see us now, in a few years when we take over the friggin' world, you could be one of those music snob types that could make snarky remarks like 'Well, I saw the Pumpkins at Peabodys in '90 when they weren't even signed yet!' Also, we are a lot of fun, so even if you don't want the whole bragging rights thing, fun's cool too! Plus, yhe drummer and I did the theme song for the Lakewood Public Library's Public Access show -- check out the video link above. Plus, it's our friggin' CD release party, so come have a blast!" -- Mike Jacobs, guitar, vocals, guitar synth, photo-theremin, keyboard
