Channel 5 Screws up Lost Finale For Clevelanders

Surely you can avoid spoilers before it re-airs on Saturday. Right?

Last night was the Lost finale — the TV event of the millenium, or something. Six years of hints and complex storytelling were to be wrapped up and viewers, almost all of whom have a bizarre religious-level obsession with the series, would finally get some answers.

WEWS, the ABC affiliate in Cleveland, obviously didn't get the memo about how important this was.

The local broadcast was rife with freezing images, spans of audio-free video, and any number of technical mistakes that undoubtedly led Lost fanatics to hurl plates and other valuables at their television. As Scene's managing editor and Lost fan Michael Gallucci said, "Thanks to Channel 5, I was even more confused about what the hell was happening." And that was among the tamer responses, as WEWS was flooded with complaints about their incompetent broadcast.

The explanation, posted on their website, after the jump.

Equipment problems at WEWS-TV caused the signal to break up during the finale of Lost Sunday night.

Station engineers worked through the night to isolate the transmission issue. The problem continued into the 11:30 news and into early Monday morning, but crews were able to fix the faulty equipment.

We'll keep you updated as we learn more about the problem.

Lost's final episode will re-air on Saturday, May 29 at 8 p.m.

WEWS-TV apologizes for the inconvenience.

If you're not going to watch the finale online, good luck avoiding spoilers until WEWS re-airs the episode Saturday night. That is, assuming they don't screw it up again.
