  • These guys are White Castle hall of famers for sure. No, seriously, they're in the hall of fame.

Almost all of us toil through our daily lives knowing that while we manage to do certain things pretty well — work, hobbies, cooking, napping — we are far from expert-level, far from uniquely gifted, at anything. We are not the best in the world in our endeavors, and the ones we are world-class in lack a structure or organization that could publicly honor our heretofore unrecognized excellence and talent.

That goes for most things, like being able to do a headstand in the middle of a crowded bar after drinking all night. Thankfully, there are heroes out there that honor heroes among us for our tiny victories in our miserable, little lives. Notably, White Castle, which is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Cravers Hall of Fame. Yes, the purveyor of those tiny if disastrous mini-burgers honors those fans who can eloquently describe just how passionate they are about White Castle.

Details after the jump.

White Castle has issued the call for entries for the 10th anniversary of its annual Cravers Hall of Fame Competition. Through August 31, contestants may submit original stories about their extreme efforts to satisfy cravings for the company's bite-sized, square hamburgers on the WhiteCastle website. Winning Cravers will be flown to Columbus, Ohio, to attend the Hall of Fame induction ceremony in November.

"If your insatiable desire for the steam-grilled-on-a-bed of onions taste of The Original Slider has inspired daring deeds or other historic events, then you may be chosen to walk the hallowed halls of the Cravers Hall of Fame," says Jamie Richardson, vice president of corporate and government relations. "For 10 years, this elite honor has been reserved for the truly exceptional ... those who have gone beyond, stayed up late, driven far and sacrificed much to consume their coveted Sliders."

Since the 2001 creation of the White Castle Hall of Fame, 6,629 Cravers have vied for the honor. Only 67 have been inducted, including rock musicians, movie stars and a Greek Orthodox priest who satisfied his crave after a 40-day religious fast. Their stories are preserved in the Hall of Fame section of the White Castle website.

Has our desire for White Castle inspired daring deeds? Damn straight. We've eaten a bunch of sliders then gotten into a car with no access to a bathroom for the next hour. That's not just a daring deed, that's a daredevil-esque deed. But I don't think that's what they're talking about. Here's a sample testimonial from Father John Stavropoulos in Canton who is a "legend" in the Cravers Hall of Fame.

When I was the pastor of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Columbus, Ohio, on Easter Sunday night (every year) after having fasted from meat for 40 days, a group of my parishioners and I would leave the resurrection service, which ended at 2:30 a.m. We’d immediately head down the street to White Castle and we would break the 40-day meat fast.

Now, I am not talking about a few people. There were at least 35 to 40 cars in the drive-thru. So close to 200 people would crave Sliders® (normally Greeks eat lamb on that night), but we found that Sliders® were quick, easy, tasty and available. Each year for three years the good word got out that Father John was leading the caravan to White Castle.
