Rock Hall Celebrating 15th Anniversary With 'Cleveland Rocks!' TV Special

Its still here.
  • It's still here.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame celebrates its 15th anniversary this Friday with a series of events you can actually afford to treat a family to.

Amid the media hype this week will surely be a shout-out to the hour-long special Cleveland Rocks!, which is scheduled to air at 7 p.m. Friday on WKYC-TV Channel 3.

What can you expect besides many gratuitous shots of the Rock Hall lit up in the downtown landscape?

Created in partnership with the Rock Hall, the show tries to make a case for the importance of the Cleveland music scene, dating back to the ’50s and Alan Freed, Bill Randall, Leo’s Casino, and Record Rendezvous. Among the interviewees are Agora owner Henry LoConti, radio star Billy Bass, ex-WMMS personalities Flash Ferenc and Kid Leo, WIXY DJ Larry Morrow, Raspberries guitarist Wally Bryson, James Gang drummer Jimmy Fox, Pere Ubu’s David Thomas, Sonny Geraci, and Michael Stanley.

“A lot of it seems like past glory,” says producer Mack Mahaffee of the fact that most of this local music history happened prior to the mid ’80s. “But there is a good rock & roll scene here now.”

Since the Rock Hall is a partner, the show will focus on the mid-’80s campaign to bring the hall here and, says Mahaffee, “about what the Rock Hall does for Cleveland; what an image-maker it’s been for Cleveland.” — Anastasia Pantsios
