Ohio Has Record Marijuana Seizure Year

Ohio had a record pot year.
  • Ohio had a record pot year.

Ohio had a really good year with pot, which probably means lots of pot users, drug dealers, harvesters, and Spongebob fans probably had a really bad year.

According to Richard Cordray, not since 1997 has Ohio seized as much illegal ganja as it as this year.

The depressing ...err... we mean impressive numbers of plants seized by those goody-goody law enforcement folks are after the jump.

70,000 pot plants were grabbed in total, which is a whole lot of freaking pot. Estimates put the street value at around $150 million.

Large-scale Mexican grows are behind the explosion in numbers, Cordray said; about half of the plants seized this year were part of these kinds of commercial growing operations, which were discovered in five counties: Licking, Logan, Muskingum, Portage and Pike.

More than 100 individuals were arrested and 60 weapons were seized by federal, state and local authorities as a result of this season's eradication initiative.

Almost three-fourths of the marijuana plants seized came from the Southeast region of the state, Cordray said: 52,308 of the 70,434 plants seized. An additional 9,773 plants were found in the Southwest, 5,464 in the Northwest and 2,889 in the Northeast. Portage County seized its share with several finds, including the recent find in Brimfield Township, where they found 705 full and seized stalks and 42 pounds of loose buds on October 5th.

This year's total represents about a 46 percent jump from the 48,000 plants that were seized last year, and this year's figure also dwarfs similar operations from 2008 (40,000 seized) and 2007 (38,000 seized).

So, yay, or something.
