Lakewood High School Sweatpants Controversy Continues

Posted By on Thu, Jan 27, 2011 at 10:59 AM

  • Controversy.

The curtain has dropped on the Great Lakewood High School Sweatpants Controversy. The recap: 16-year-old Stephanie Milligan was told by doctors she could wear sweatpants to school after a back injury. The sartorial suggestion, however, was counter to the school’s dress code. As a result, Stephanie and her family locked horns with the school’s principal William Wagner. The girl missed 31 days of class.

Let's take a step back. We had a gut-feeling this situation would play out in a predictable way: the Lakewood High brass would cave and the teen would be allowed back in the classroom, in sweatpants or some agreed upon form of comfortable clothing. Compromise was surely in the offing; clear heads would prevail.

Well — pretty much ruining our faith in the ability of grown adults to come to logical solutions to problems — the situation has concluded in a way we would not have predicted: Stephanie is decamping for a different school district. According to Lakewood Patch, she’s taking her talents to North Olmsted, where she’ll be allowed to rock sweaties.

Which leaves us with one thought: Really?
