Kelley Williams-Bolar, Convicted Akron Mom and School Employee, Will Retain Her Job

Kelley Williams-Bolar's story went national last week, with ABC News and others covering the story of the Akron mom who lied about her residency so her kids could attend Copley schools instead of Akron schools. An investigation by Copley turned up the tampering, a process similar to ones they've initiated dozens of times lately to catch parents lying to squirrel their children into Copley, which is not an open enrollment district.

Sympathy was heavily on the mother's side. Who would blame the mom who would do anything to get her kids into a better school? Which is why it's not surprising that after serving her jail sentence — nine out of the ten days originally given — Akron Public Schools say that she has served her time for the felony and will be allowed to keep her job.

Fox 8 reports:

According to Superintendent James, The Ohio Department of Educations Office for Professional Conduct ultimately holds the decision to revoke or suspend Williams-Bolar's educational assistant certificate. If they choose not to act on her conviction she will be returning to work in the near future.

Williams-Bolar, 40, was recently sentenced by Summit County Common Pleas Judge Patricia Cosgrove to 10 days in the Summit County jail for her crime. She served nine of the 10 day jail sentence.

A jury found her guilty of falsifying documents by saying her two children lived in the Copley-Fairlawn School District, when in actuality they lived with-in the Akron School District.

Akron, in a moment of clear thinking, decided it would probably not be best to draw unwanted negative press to the district on a story where sympathies are already heavily sided with the woman. A shitstorm they do not want is rightly and easily avoided.
