New Studio Opening in Lakewood

Posted By on Fri, Feb 11, 2011 at 3:47 PM

Roosted in Lakewood’s Birdtown district, Dovecote will house an unexpected flock of colleagues when it opens at the Screw Factory on March 11. Despite their varied mediums and backgrounds, jewelry artists Kathy Patton and Teresa Crompton and printmaker Sarah Darby share a vision of a studio/gallery offering finely crafted goods and a welcoming air, even in the imposing manufacturing space of Templar Industrial Park.

Darby’s prints express intensely personal scenes by way of stylized, dollish figures, kind in their essence but inhabiting forms shadowed in the melancholy and weird. Her subject matter roams over childhood and aging, motherhood and family, to fanciful speculation on the fate of disappearing honeybees.

Crompton’s work is distinguished for the diversity of materials she makes use of, spanning precious metals, gems, enamel, dyed leather, and even silk. Patton’s materials are more austerely confined to silver and enamel, molded, pressed, and cut into dripping protozoan forms and contorted heart shapes.

Beside the proprietors’ own wares, Dovecote’s premiere will feature the works of glass artist Daniel Echeverry, and purses by Jackie Adamany of Blue Orchid Handbags (versatile but elegant) and Meghan Willis of tsurubride.com (playful and adorable). The opening reception will be March 11 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Screw Factory at the Lake Erie Building, 13000 Athens Ave. in Lakewood; find them on the third floor, #337.
