Yes, You Can Get Pulled Over in a Funeral Procession

Being part of a funeral procession only exempts you from certain laws. Like blowing through red lights, and driving under 10 mph. However some rules still apply. Like needing a valid driver's license, and making sure your passengers refrain from hanging half their bodies out the window.

That's the lesson from the Morning Journal, which reports on the case of some Lorain men who thought being part of a funeral procession gave them driving immunity.

An off-duty officer working at the Lorain Metropolitan Housing Authority was parked near the intersection when he saw a long funeral procession heading east on East 30th Street around 2 p.m.

The cars in the procession did not have funeral markers or flags and many were honking their horns and people inside the cars were yelling out their windows, the report stated.

As the procession drove past, the officer saw Terry Atkinson, 27, sitting on the passenger side of a 2006 Dodge Charger with half his body outside the car. When the car was pulled over, Atkinson got out of the car and started to yell at the officer, but was told to get back inside and complied, according to the report.

The driver, Christopher Atkinson, 23, told the officer it was their cousin’s funeral and said they were “just having fun.”

Christopher Atkinson, as it turns out, didn't have a license. Never had one, actually. Terry was charged with riding outside the vehicle, but since he had a valid license, he was allowed to drive the car away.
