Outsiders tend to judge your city or state on a short list of benchmarks: how many sports teams you have, number of gourmet cupcake shops, and Fortune 500 companies.

Ohio does pretty well on at least two of these fronts. (We could really use more gourmet cupcake shops, to be honest.)

Via Crain's, the new Fortune 500 list is out and 27 companies call the Buckeye State home. Only New York , California, Texas, and Illinois have more. View the whole list here if you wish, or just grab the CliffsNotes version after the jump.

The largest company based in Ohio is Cardinal Health of Dublin, with annual revenues of $98.6 billion. That makes it the 19th-largest company in the United States.

The largest Northeast Ohio company is Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., which ranks as the sixth-largest in the state, and the 139th-largest nationwide, with revenues of $18.8 billion.

Nine of Ohio's 27 Fortune 500 companies are based in Northeast Ohio. In addition to Goodyear, they are Progressive Corp., Eaton Corp., FirstEnergy Corp., Parker Hannifin Corp., Sherwin-Williams Co., TravelCenters of America, KeyCorp and Lubrizol Corp.
