Rock Hall Inductions Return to Cleveland in 2012

Saturday night at the Rock Hall’s annual "It’s Only Rock and Roll" fundraiser at Public Hall, Rock Hall CEO Terry Stewart announced that the annual induction ceremony will return to Cleveland next year. It will take place April 14, 2012, at Public Hall.

When the ceremony was held in Cleveland in 2009, the Rock Hall Foundation executives in New York promised it would be in Cleveland every three years. It appears that they are making good on their promise. As in 2009, the induction itself will be accompanied by a week-long festival of activities.

The event, usually held at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York, has been in Cleveland only twice previously. In 1997, less than two years after the opening of the Rock Hall, it was held here for the first time, inducting Parliament-Funkadelic, Joni Mitchell, the BeeGees, the Jacksons, the Rascals, Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Still and Nash, Bill Monroe, Mahalia Jackson, and indie label executive Syd Nathan. Twelve years later, it returned to induct Little Anthony & the Imperials, Jeff Beck. Run D.M.C., Metallica, Bobby Womack, Wanda Jackson, Bill Black, D.J. Fontana, and Spooner Oldham. That event was held at Public Hall, with tickets in the balcony sold to the public. That’s expected to be the case next year as well.

Artists are eligible 25 years after releasing their first recording, making Guns N’ Roses the hottest artist eligible for the first time. (Long shot Debbie Gibson is also eligible next year). However, many major, influential acts like Black Sabbath were nominated many times before being voted in, and equally influential acts like Genesis weren’t even nominated until they were eligible for many years. — Anastasia Pantsios
