Cleveland Will Not Be Breaking World Record for Canoes and Kayaks, Sorry

Its your fault Cleveland wont look like this.
  • It's your fault Cleveland won't look like this.

Put that canoe back in the garage. The Cleveland Metroparks Canoe & Kayak Challenge, scheduled for May 21 at Hinckley Lake, has been canceled.

Cleveland Metroparks was trying to retake the Guinness World Record for the Largest Raft of Free Floating Canoes and Kayaks. It held the title for seven years from May 2001 through 2008 when a group from New York took the title.

Unfortunately, the Metroparks couldn’t scare up the more than 1,619 canoes and kayaks they needed to take the title back from Pittsburgh’s Venture Outdoors who won it in 2010. That’s a dramatically larger number than the 776 it floated to win the title in 2001. After the pre-registration deadline of May 6 passed without attracting enough participants, the event was called off.

The New York group says it intends to challenge Pittsburgh so Clevelanders will have to cheer for them vicariously. — Anastasia Pantsios
