You couldn't keep most Emmy-nominated actors away from the cameras and red carpet. But one of them is skipping all that to spend his night in Cleveland.

Maurice Benard recently received his sixth Daytime Emmy Award Nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series; he snagged the actual award once before, for his portrayal of Michael "Sonny" Corinthos, Jr. on the long-running ABC soap opera General Hospital. Although the ceremony this is being held this Sunday, June 19 in Las Vegas, Benard will be in Cleveland for an appearance at Hilarities.

Why, you may ask?

“I already booked several appearances a while back and it would've been wrong to assume I was going to be nominated,” says Benard. “I'm also not going to back out of an appearance, so I'm excited to be able to share the night with Cleveland.”

Benard says the evening will “become what it becomes.” His non-comedic presentation will touch on a variety of topics, including his nomination, soap operas, living with bipolar disorder, and his fear of flying. There will even be some surprises for the crowd.

“I can't reveal my surprises yet but I'm sure people will find out from Twitter after the first show anyway,” he jokes.

After his presentation, Benard says he will open the floor up to the audience for questions or discussion.

“It'll be anything the crowd wants; the focus will be on them and not the television,” Benard said. “I'm sure someone will be watching [the Emmys] somewhere inside the venue and when I find out the outcome I'll acknowledge whatever it is and then go back to whatever it is we were doing.”

Benard does acknowledge that the Emmys will put a unique spin on the night. His wife will be in the audience, for one thing; but he promises a good time, regardless of the outcome. “I think people should come out because they can be there when I find out if I've won or lost,” he said. “This might never happen again.”

And if that isn't reason enough to come, Benard has one more for you.

“I have dimples. Everyone loves dimples,” Benard says with a laugh.

The show begins at 7 p.m., with tickets starting at $75. Hilarities is inside Pickwick and Frolic at 2035 East Fourth St. For more information, call 216-736-4242 or visit — Max Hayden
