Nerd Hordes to Flood Cleveland Streets; Avengers Shoot Coming

Posted By on Fri, Jul 22, 2011 at 1:17 PM

Our inner nerd just died.
  • Our inner nerd just died.

Besides resting a chainsaw against public employees' collective bargaining rights and successfully shaking down casino developers, Governor John Kasich has another feather to jam into his first-term cap — he helped bring in the Avengers.

We guess that should actually be The Avengers. As every comic nerd knows (and we're talking more from inside the tribe than as an outsider), Marvel is gearing up to shoot some scenes in Cleveland for its upcoming bazillion dollar movie adaption of the kind-of popular comic series (true fans don't really go for the Avengers — it's like if you filled in the blank of what's your favorite NBA team with All Star East).

Principle shooting is taking place in more coastal locales, but the Cleveland scenes will roll in August. This movie has some real Hollywood star-wattage behind it, including Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Chris Evans as Captain America, and Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow. It was originally up in the air as to who among the Big Names would be in Forest City for the filming. But today's Plain Dealer article on the film has a giant snap of Johansson and the caption reads she'll be “performing several scenes” here. That performance, based on the other Marvel movies, will probably amount to Johansson quietly burning a sexy-shaped hole through the movie screen between rounds of tone-deaf dialogue and Robert Downey Jr. doing his best Robert Downey Jr. impression. But hey, tax dollars for Ohio!

Potential stalkers, pay heed: the PD has a list of where and when the shooting will take place, at least the production times that will close down downtown roadways. This could be your chance to breach the gloom of mom's basement (stock nerd dig!) and catch a flesh and blood glimpse of Black Widow — finally, you'll be able to ask if she remembers that time you sent her a letter courtesy of Nick Fury, agent of S.H.I.E.I.D, and did she like the poetry yeah it was a little much but the paper doll took a lot of hours and does she still have the lock of hair we swear it was washed and why didn't you write back, Black Widow, why?

Then again, if Ms, Johansson is looking for a young print journalist to take her around town, we have some ideas.
