Maxwell Out at 98.5 WNCX

Maxwell is no more at 98.5.

Benjamin “Maxwell” Bornstein, who left WMMS in November 2009 under strained relations and a contract impasse, and who joined WNCX in November 2010 in a curious move considering his recent history on Cleveland airwaves and the station's audience's preferences, was not on the air this morning in his usual morning-drive timeslot. His 98.5 tenure, for those of you who are good at math, was less than a year.

Ohio Media Watch first reported the news last night. Today, they wrote:

Program director Bill Louis is on the station this morning, playing the station’s usual classic rock music, with not a hint of any mention of “The Maxwell Show”, the talk show which has occupied the WNCX morning drive airwaves.

And the exclamation point on Maxwell’s exit comes when you go to the WNCX website, which has been scrubbed of all mentions of the show, not to mention “The Maxwell Show”‘s own section of the website, which returns “Page not found — Sorry, no posts matched your criteria” as of this morning.

We coined a phrase for this: it’s the most complete “Soviet-style purge” of a station’s morning show that we’ve ever seen, both on the web and on the air.

CBS, which runs 98.5, is launching 92.3 The Fan on Monday morning, which was probably the death-knell of Maxwell. That, and his flagging ratings.
