"Yes on 2" Camp Unleashes Secret Weapon

With "Yes on Issue 2" lagging badly in the polls, the No campaign closed with a powerful ad featuring former U.S. Senator from Ohio and astronaut John Glenn, while teachers, firefighters, and cops fanned out across the state knocking on doors. But it was the folks who favor keeping anti-union Senate Bill 5 in place who rolled out the big gun ...

Yep, voters across the state reported this weekend receiving a "Yes on 2" robocall from none other than Pat Boone.

In fact, the squeaky-clean crooner of such unforgettable ’50s hits as “April Love” and “Love Letters in the Sand” is the Republicans’ go-to guy for robocalls. In the past five years, he’s done them for GOP candidates in Florida, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Arkansas. Unfortunately, all but one of those candidates lost, suggesting that Boone’s support may not be such a lucky charm. Maybe the GOP consultants hiring Boone were entranced by the sledgehammer strains of his 1997 heavy-metal album In a Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy, for which the then-62-year-old Christian conservative recorded such tunes as Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train” and Guns N’ Roses’ “Paradise City.” — Anastasia Pantsios
