Report: Ohio Ranked Second for Mercury Emissions from Power Plants

Posted By on Thu, Nov 10, 2011 at 3:43 PM

The string of positive rankings for the Buckeye state ended around these parts today when a release from Environment Ohio landed in our inbox. Subject line: “New Data Shows Ohio Power Plants Emit 2nd Most Mercury Pollution Nationally."

Boo, Ohio.

The data was culled from the EPA, and the 2010 numbers are not pretty. Ohio Environment says that Ohio's power plants are spewing more mercury pollution than only those in one other state. Additional downage: 8 of the top 100 most polluting power plants reside in our state.

“Parents in Ohio shouldn’t have to worry that their children’s bodies are toxic dumping grounds,” said Paul Rolfe, Field Associate for Environment Ohio, in the press release. “The Environmental Protection Agency is moving forward to protect our children’s health from toxic mercury pollution, and we can’t let big polluters stand in the way.“

Environment Ohio says the EPA will be setting a standard for mercury emissions next month.
