Carlos Baerga Throws Support Behind Rick Santorum

Although our own primary match-up is in the rear view mirror, the GOP candidates are still blasting away at one another on the national stage. Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum are trying to gobble up as many delegates as possible (with Newt Gingrich snatching whatever falls off the table) before the Republican convention. Things are pretty close, statistically speaking, which means endorsements — those officially-stamped and publicized friendships candidates wave in each others' faces — carry a little more cache. Everyone wants to know who Sarah Palin supports, or George Bush, or Carlos Baerga.

You read that right . . . Carlos Baerga, the former Indians second basemen, has thrown his two cents into the primary race. He's a Santorum guy, according to a release sent out by the candidate's campaign. Baerga's support comes as the GOP candidates go for voters in Puerto Rico, which holds it's primary Sunday. 20 delegates are on the line.

From the Plain Dealer:

In a press release from the ex-Pennsylvania senator's campaign, Baerga said he backs Santorum "because he is a Christian and has fought for the people of Puerto Rico for many years, and stands behind the people on the issue of statehood."

"I am grateful to have played professional baseball in the United States, and I want all young people to have the same opportunity, and Puerto Rican statehood would make that possible," Baerga's statement continued.

We hear Omar Vizquel reportedly hasn't made up his mind which candidate he's backing — can't decide between the two candidates' economic development plans.
