Severance WalMart: soon to be something fresh & exciting?

The “evil satan” of retailing will be coming to Oakwood Commons after all. Last year, local residents tried — and failed — to overturn South Euclid’s rezoning of the former Oakwood Country Club on Warrensville Center Road for a retail complex. One of their most frantic arguments was that a Walmart Superstore would anchor the development being constructed by First Interstate Properties.

First Interstate has now confirmed that will be the case. The store is slated to open in mid 2013. The Walmart at Cleveland Heights’ Severance Town Center a mile away will be closing.

According to Cleveland Heights Patch, Cleveland Heights Mayor Ed Kelley said,

I look at it as a positive opportunity for the city and the owners of the mall to get somebody new, fresh and exciting into the space.

He also mentioned that he doesn’t shop there. Was that his way of thumbing his nose at the ubiquitous big-box retailer as they hightail it out of his city? — Anastasia Pantsios
