Horses Killed in Lorain County Barn Fire

Posted By on Fri, May 11, 2012 at 9:57 AM

Bad day for the horses in Henrietta, a rural dot out in Lorain County. According to the Morning Journal, a blaze burned down a barn the area where a number of horses were stored. Unfortunately, not all the animals escaped safely.

The fire happened in the early hours Wednesday. Right now officials haven’t thrown a spotlight on a cause. The initial 911 call came from a caretaker who lived on site. Once the fire began, he threw open the doors on the barn, hoping to give the horses a path to safety. 16 escaped, but five did not.

Florence Township Fire Chief Bill Rennie tells the paper it was quite a battle:

"It was really going when we got there,” Rennie said. The horses were running loose, too. Responders were able to corral up the 16 surviving horses. There were no injuries to people, Rennie said.

About 50 firefighters from 10 departments fought the fire. There were no hydrants in the rural location, so the departments had to truck in all the water, extending the battle to four or five hours, Rennie said. There was nothing left when the fire was finally out.
